Norman, Santa Barbara, Calif., Cody, Los Olivos, Calif. and Holladay, Buellton, Calif., team on the No. 1x JCR Honda Racing Honda CRF450X withstood the challenge to cover the 705-mile course in the fastest time of all 278 starters in the race. In the unlimited Class 1 that had 25 starters, 18-year old Justin Davis, Chino Hills, Calif., powered his Chevy-powered ESM open-wheel desert race car to his third class win of the year in his first year in the ultra-competitive class.

After complete review of the data tracking devices used by each vehicle in the race and with time penalties assessed accordingly for course deviations and/or speeding on the brief pavement seconds used as part of the race course, the results were declared official by SCORE International officials on Sunday morning.
As the finish line in the heart of Ensenada closed Saturday night at 10:18 p.m. PST for 155 official finishers in the 44th annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, it was obvious that another memorable and colorful chapter had been added to the legacy of this popular desert race in the northern part of the magnificent Baja California peninsula.

For the first time in race history, SCORE Trophy Trucks were required to re-start at race mile five after a local construction big rig truck jack-knived, rolled and block the course. With the course mileage adjusted to 700 miles for the marquee SCORE racing division for high-tech, 850 horsepower unlimited production trucks, 13 SCORE Trophy Trucks began starting at 11:17 a.m. (PST) but were forced to stop as the construction truck blocked the race course. SCORE officials decided to move the other 16 vehicles in the class in caravan-style to race mile five where they officially began to leave the start line at 12:23 p.m.

This incident forced the balance of the classes to be pushed back one and a half hours to begin starting at 1:03 p.m. This year’s race started for the 37th time and finished for the 21st time in Ensenada. The race started and finished on Boulevard Costero adjacent to the picturesque Bahia de Todos Santos in front of the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada.

As all three top finishers crossed the line physically within one total minute of each other, the Vanderwey team earned their best finish in SCORE’s marquee racing division in this class in this race with a time of 14:54:11 (46.97mph) while Menzies, who secured the 2011 SCORE Trophy Truck and SCORE Overall point championship with his third place finish as a SCORE rookie racer, completed the course in 14:55:40 (46.90mph).

Fourth overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck was Andy’s uncle and Scott McMillin’s brother, Mark McMillin, El Cajon, Calif. who with his son Daniel McMillin, La Mesa, Calif. and Chuck Hovey, Escondido, Calif., ran a time of 15:19:53 (45.66mph) in their No. 23 McMillin Racing Ford F-150.

Adding to the McMillin family legacy in SCORE Baja racing, Mark’s youngest son Luke McMillin, 18, El Cajon, Calif., with driving assistance from Justin Smith, Capistrano Beach, Calif. won Class 1/2-1600 for the second time this season and the first time in this race to secure the season point championship his class for the second straight year in an AlumiCraft-VW.

Capping off the most spectacular SCORE race in the McMillin family’s 36-year history of SCORE desert racing, Scott McMillin’s daughter, Jessica McMillin, 26, overcame an early rollover near Ojos Negros to finish the season undefeated with five wins with her victory Saturday in the Protruck class in the No. 1331 McMillin Realty Ford F-150. She was the only SCORE racer this season to win her class in all five SCORE Desert Series races. Jessica, Andy, Daniel and Luke McMillin are all third-generation SCORE desert racers, continuing the lasting legacy left by family patriarch Corky McMillin, who passed away in 2006. Jessica McMillin also earned the SCORE Protruck class championship for the season.

Finishing a career-best fifth overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck was Clyde Stacy, 66, of Bristol, Tenn., who with Juan Carlos Lopez, Tecate, Mexico, finished in 15:40:38 (44.65mph) in the No. 18 RPM Off-Road Chevy Silverado.

Finishing seventh overall after starting first in SCORE Trophy Truck in the No. 54 Chevy Silverado was reality TV personality Jesse James, Austin, Texas who covered the course splitting the driving with Jeff Geiser, Phoenix, in 16:24:02 (42.68mph). Enjoying his best season in 10 years of SCORE desert racing, James finished in the top 10 in his class in all three races he ran in 2011.

SCORE Desert Series points standing after round 2 (San Felipe 250) of five races for the 2011 SCORE Desert Series championship is close as veteran SCORE Trophy-Truck driver Jesse Jones and young gun unlimited Class 1 racer Justin Davis lead their respective classes and are tied at the top of SCORE point leader board. Colton Udall is leading the motorcycles points. Other leaders include Luke McMillin, Clyde Stacy, Justin Matney, Heidi Steele, Dan Chamlee, Elias Hanna, Perry McNeil, Jessica McMillin, Brandon Brown, Wes Bevly III & Wes Bevly IV. Desert Series points are based on starting, finishing, placement and number of official starters within each class. Jesse Jones, 45, of Litchfield Park, Ariz., and Justin Davis, 17 of Chino Hills, Calif., not only lead their respective classes following Round 2 of the Desert Series, they are tied for the SCORE Overall point lead with 139 point each. Jones, the reigning Trophy Truck and overall point champion, has finished a very close second in both of the first two races of the season in the No. 1 Jones Motorsports Ford F-250 SCORE Trophy-Truck, while Davis, last year’s SCORE Lite point champion, has won Class 1 in both races in the Green Army Motorsports Chevy-powered ESM unlimited open-wheel desert race buggy.
Off-road racers are now preparing for the season’s next race, the 43rd annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500 to be held 2.-5. June 2011 in Ensenada, Mexico. The event will be the second of three SCORE races held annually on the Baja California peninsula.
In starting defense of his impressive championship from 2010 when he won two races in the Trophy Truck class, Jones started the 2011 season finishing runner-up to Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies by just 59 seconds in Laughlin and then got even closer to the top of the podium in San Felipe, finishing just 44 seconds behind Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren.

“The key is to stay in the hunt early and be in a position to win it all at the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in November and I would say we are on target so far,” said Jones, who also won the 2001 SCORE Class 8 season point title. “We could have won one or both of the first two races, but both Bryce and Rob did a better job and while we want to win races, it is equally gratifying to win the season point championship in SCORE Trophy-Truck—the most competitive class with the world’s best drivers in the entire sport of desert racing.”

Following his first SCORE Trophy-Truck race win in just his second race in this class for high-tech, 850-horsepower, unlimited production trucks, rookie Menzies finished sixth in San Felipe and is currently fourth overall and third in the Trophy Truck division points this year with 135 points in the No. 70 Menzies Motorsports Ford F-150.

Picking up his eighth career SCORE Trophy-Truck race win in San Felipe, MacCachren, an eight-time SCORE season point champion, is third in overall and second in SCORE Trophy-Truck points so far after finishing fourth in Laughlin with 138 points, just one shy of Jones and Davis in the No. 20 MasterCraft Racing Ford F-150. Following consistent seventh and fifth-place finishes in the season’s first two events, Gary Weyhrich, Troutdale, Ore., is fifth in overall points and fourth in SCORE Trophy-Truck with 119 in the No. 98 TSCO Motorsports Ford F-150.

Desert racers Nick Vanderwey of Arizona and Chad Thornton of New Mexico received the pole positions for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles in the drawing for starting positions. Round 2 of the 2011 SCORE Desert Series will be held 10.-13. March 2011 in Mexico’s picturesque fishing village of San Felipe, located 120 miles south of the U.S. border on the East side of the Baja California peninsula along the azure waters of the tranquil Sea of Cortez. The green flag will drop at 6 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed three hours after the last Sportsman ATV later by the car and truck classes at approximately 10 a.m. Webcast during pre-race events (contingency) and during the race at Puro Off-Road, sign up for the reminder!!
Following January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, this US Desert Racing Series will be visiting Mexico for the first of its three annual SCORE Baja races. Last year’s overall 4-wheel, 2-wheel and ATV champions are all expected to again be part of the field. Last year’s overall 4-wheel champion was the unlimited Class 1 All German Motorsports team of Armin Schwarz, Germany/Martin Christensen, Escondido, Calif. (Denmark), 2-wheel champion was the JCR Honda team of Colton Udall/Jeff Kargola, San Clemente, Calif. on a Honda CRF450X and the Overall ATV winner was the team of Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif./Josh Caster, El Cajon, Calif./Wes Miller, Los Angeles, on a Honda TRX700X. Also entered is Jesse Jones, Litchfield Park, Ariz., the reigning SCORE Desert Series overall season point champion who also won the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck in this race last year in his No. 1 Jones Motorsports Ford F-150.

1061.69 mile for the Trophy Truck showdown between the McMillins and Jesse James for the 2010 desert series trophy Truck crown and championship. The granddaddy of all desert races has 11 of 16 former SCORE Trophy Truck champs entered in the race down Mexico’s Baja California peninsula and without a doubt is a victory at the “mille” a highlight for every desert racers portfolio and top priority on the “to do” list. The high-tech, 850 horsepower, unlimited production truck class, star of the sport since SCORE created the class in 1994 will be most observed. Jesse Jones, trophy truck #76 with 315 points after the Primm 300 trailing Andy McMillin by 6 points in the overall standing. Nick Vanderwey the 3rd in points. With just six points separating San Diego’s McMillin, who splits driving with his father Scott McMillin, National City, Calif., in the No. 31 McMillin Realty Ford F-150, and Jones, Litchfield Park, Ariz., who has lured five-time Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 class champion Larry Ragland, Cave Creek, Ariz., this battle promises to be a desert duel for the ages as both battle for the 2010 SCORE Trophy-Truck and 2010 SCORE Overall point championships. Andy McMillin has 321 championship points and Jones has 315. While Andy McMillin has four career SCORE Trophy-Truck race wins, including two with his father, Jones has two and Ragland has an amazing 10, second-most in SCORE Trophy-Truck history.

The race will begin in Ensenada, Mexico on November 17th and competitors will drive under the clock attempting to finish in La Paz, Mexico located at the bottom of the Baja California Peninsula. Dave Mason is a former winner of the prestigious motorsports event and carries over 20-years of Baja Racing experience. Rick Backus is a long time team owner-sponsor, who has taken over as a driver and racked up impressive finishes over the last several years at the Pro Truck level. Tom Klauer was added to form a trio due to the long enduring race. Although it will mark Klauer’s first-ever Baja off-road race he’s no stranger to the terrain or to driving race cars.

Klauer’s passion for race cars began with driving Indy-Lite style race cars. He’s graduated at an advanced level from two of the most recognized driving schools in the country (Russell School of Auto Racing and Bondurant). Klauer has over 50-career race starts with 15 of those finishes on the podium. An avid collector of vintage race cars, Klauer houses 10 historic NASCAR’s that he actively races. But for Klauer there are a few events he has wanted an opportunity to compete in. One is a professional NASCAR event, which he’s entered into on July 18th at Portland International Raceway and the other is the Baja 1000.

“In past years I have had the opportunity to gain some off road experience in the varied terrain of the Baja Peninsula. I started my Baja experience in the early 80’s when Cabo San Lucas was barely a mark on the map. It’s such a combination of beautiful landscape and challenging rugged terrain,” said Klauer. “Who wouldn’t want to race in the Baja 1000? I look forward to being a participant in this year’s event racing for Western Motorsports.”

The Western Motorsports team has already begun planning for the enormously large logistical challenges of such a long event in a foreign land. Leading up to the race the three drivers and their navigators will conduct a series of test days and pre-running events. In between his role as President of Pick-n-Pull Self Service Auto and Truck Dismantler’s Klauer will fit in the test days in addition to his debut in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race on July 18th at the Portland International Raceway. He will be piloting the #25 Schnitzer Steel Industries (Cascade Steel Rolling Mills & Pick-n-Pull) car.

“We are excited to be racing again this year in the Baja 1000. It’s the ultimate challenge of man and machine. There simply is not another off-road event that has the prestige and mystic of the Baja 1000,” said Backus. “Dave [Mason] and I aren’t getting any younger and we thought it would be good to add another driver. But he’d need to be a fit for our team, not just competitively, but would need to fit our culture and our group. Tom [Klauer] was like one of the team from our first meeting and we knew right away he would be a great addition. We are really looking forward to having a fun and competitive event.”

Round 2 of the 2010 SCORE Desert Series will be held March 12-14 in Mexico’s picturesque fishing village of San Felipe, located 120 miles south of the U.S. border on the East side of the Baja California peninsula along the azure waters of the tranquil Sea of Cortez.
We dedicated this website here to our favorite off-road desert race, the classic Baja 1000. (“We” as of a few die-hard motorsport and desert racing fans) and want to keep it also mainly a platform for Baja 1000 reporting and race info. With nearly 275 entries expected, which would be in the top five in race history, competition will be held in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the 232-mile race. The green flag will drop at 6 a.m. Pacific time on Saturday, March 13, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed three hours later by the car and truck classes at approximately 10 a.m. local time. The start and finish line for the race will once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race, with a 10-hour time limit to become an official finisher.
Following January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series will visit Mexico for the first of three races in 2010.

Desert racers Ron Whitton of Arizona and Southern California’s Robby Bell received the first starts for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles in the computerized drawing for starting positions held Feb. 13. Whitton races in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division while Bell competes in Class 22 for open motorcycles.
Drawing the first starting slot for the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars was Germany’s Armin Schwarz and teammate Martin Christensen, Escondido, Calif.
Riding the first ATV off the line will be Class 25 team led by Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif.

Bell, 24, of Sun City, Calif., who left the factory Honda team at the end of 2008 after winning the two-wheel overall title in San Felipe three straight years (2006, 2007, 2008), returns to San Felipe for the first time since on a Kawasaki, leading a two-motorcycle Bruce Penhall Motorsports charge to Baja on the No. 2x Kawasaki KX450F. His co-rider, also a former Honda champion, is legendary SCORE Baja racer Steve Hengeveld, 34, Oak Hills, Calif., who was the overall San Felipe motorcycle winner for four straight year’s with Honda icon Johnny Campbell (2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004). Kawasaki will have factory-supported entries in San Felipe for this first time since 1996 and will attempt to break the JCR Honda dynasty which has won 12 of the last 13 SCORE San Felipe 250 races.
In the first 23 years of this race, Honda has earned 14 overall motorcycle victories (including the last four years), Kawasaki has six, KTM has two and Husqvarna has one.

At the 24th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, MasterCraft Racing has entered not only company owner Robbie Pierce’s No. 30 Chevy Silverado SCORE Trophy-Truck, but also the No. 20 Chevy Silverado SCORE Trophy-Truck to be driven by eight-time SCORE season class point champion Rob MacCachren of Las Vegas and the No. 42 Chevy Silverado driven by Will Staats, Valencia, Calif. All three trucks were built by prominent chassis builder Mike Julson’s Jimco Racing Products of Santee, Calif. Julson is listed as a co-driver for both Pierce and MacCachren for this race, if needed.
The MasterCraft racers will not be eligible to win any part of the special $10,000 MasterCraft Safety cash contingency bonus purse MasterCraft Safety has offered for this year’s San Felipe race.
In San Felipe, Pierce will start fourth, MacCachren 21st and Staats 25th in the massive SCORE Trophy-Truck field.
