Andy & Scott McMillin capture Trophy Truck, overall 4wheel victory

For the second time in three years, the Southern California son and father race team of Andy and Scott McMillin have etched their names again on the granite history of the world’s most legendary desert race and along with the team of Kendall Norman/Quinn Cody/Logan Holladay advanced their part in motorsports history by capturing the overall 4wheel and 2wheel victories in the 44th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 desert race. The season finale of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series ended late Saturday in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.
Andy McMillin, 24, and his father Scott McMillin, 51, of San Diego, teamed as they did in this race in 2009 to capture the overall 4wheel title in the granddaddy of all desert racing in their No. 31 McMillin Realty Ford F-150 SCORE Trophy Truck. The featured SCORE racing division has a race-high 29 starters.

Norman, Santa Barbara, Calif., Cody, Los Olivos, Calif. and Holladay, Buellton, Calif., team on the No. 1x JCR Honda Racing Honda CRF450X withstood the challenge to cover the 705-mile course in the fastest time of all 278 starters in the race. In the unlimited Class 1 that had 25 starters, 18-year old Justin Davis, Chino Hills, Calif., powered his Chevy-powered ESM open-wheel desert race car to his third class win of the year in his first year in the ultra-competitive class.

After complete review of the data tracking devices used by each vehicle in the race and with time penalties assessed accordingly for course deviations and/or speeding on the brief pavement seconds used as part of the race course, the results were declared official by SCORE International officials on Sunday morning.
As the finish line in the heart of Ensenada closed Saturday night at 10:18 p.m. PST for 155 official finishers in the 44th annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, it was obvious that another memorable and colorful chapter had been added to the legacy of this popular desert race in the northern part of the magnificent Baja California peninsula.

For the first time in race history, SCORE Trophy Trucks were required to re-start at race mile five after a local construction big rig truck jack-knived, rolled and block the course. With the course mileage adjusted to 700 miles for the marquee SCORE racing division for high-tech, 850 horsepower unlimited production trucks, 13 SCORE Trophy Trucks began starting at 11:17 a.m. (PST) but were forced to stop as the construction truck blocked the race course. SCORE officials decided to move the other 16 vehicles in the class in caravan-style to race mile five where they officially began to leave the start line at 12:23 p.m.

This incident forced the balance of the classes to be pushed back one and a half hours to begin starting at 1:03 p.m. This year’s race started for the 37th time and finished for the 21st time in Ensenada. The race started and finished on Boulevard Costero adjacent to the picturesque Bahia de Todos Santos in front of the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada.

As all three top finishers crossed the line physically within one total minute of each other, the Vanderwey team earned their best finish in SCORE’s marquee racing division in this class in this race with a time of 14:54:11 (46.97mph) while Menzies, who secured the 2011 SCORE Trophy Truck and SCORE Overall point championship with his third place finish as a SCORE rookie racer, completed the course in 14:55:40 (46.90mph).

Fourth overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck was Andy’s uncle and Scott McMillin’s brother, Mark McMillin, El Cajon, Calif. who with his son Daniel McMillin, La Mesa, Calif. and Chuck Hovey, Escondido, Calif., ran a time of 15:19:53 (45.66mph) in their No. 23 McMillin Racing Ford F-150.

Adding to the McMillin family legacy in SCORE Baja racing, Mark’s youngest son Luke McMillin, 18, El Cajon, Calif., with driving assistance from Justin Smith, Capistrano Beach, Calif. won Class 1/2-1600 for the second time this season and the first time in this race to secure the season point championship his class for the second straight year in an AlumiCraft-VW.

Capping off the most spectacular SCORE race in the McMillin family’s 36-year history of SCORE desert racing, Scott McMillin’s daughter, Jessica McMillin, 26, overcame an early rollover near Ojos Negros to finish the season undefeated with five wins with her victory Saturday in the Protruck class in the No. 1331 McMillin Realty Ford F-150. She was the only SCORE racer this season to win her class in all five SCORE Desert Series races. Jessica, Andy, Daniel and Luke McMillin are all third-generation SCORE desert racers, continuing the lasting legacy left by family patriarch Corky McMillin, who passed away in 2006. Jessica McMillin also earned the SCORE Protruck class championship for the season.

Finishing a career-best fifth overall and in SCORE Trophy Truck was Clyde Stacy, 66, of Bristol, Tenn., who with Juan Carlos Lopez, Tecate, Mexico, finished in 15:40:38 (44.65mph) in the No. 18 RPM Off-Road Chevy Silverado.

Finishing seventh overall after starting first in SCORE Trophy Truck in the No. 54 Chevy Silverado was reality TV personality Jesse James, Austin, Texas who covered the course splitting the driving with Jeff Geiser, Phoenix, in 16:24:02 (42.68mph). Enjoying his best season in 10 years of SCORE desert racing, James finished in the top 10 in his class in all three races he ran in 2011.

27 SCORE racers remain in hunt for Toyota Milestone awards heading to season ending 44th annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000. Following the fourth of five races in the 2011 SCORE Desert Series, 27 of SCORE’s toughest drivers remain in the hunt to earn 2011 SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards.
Leading the way are eight racers in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division and four in the Class 1 for unlimited open-wheelers.
The eight SCORE Trophy-Truck drivers who have completed every race mile so far this season are: Bryce Menzies, Las Vegas (No. 70, Ford F-150), Rob MacCachren, Las Vegas (No. 20, Ford F-150), Gus Vildosola Jr., Mexicali, Mexico (No. 21, Ford F-150), Pete Sohren, Phoenix (No. 2, Ford F-150), Gary Weyhrich, Troutdale, Ore. (No. 98, Ford F-150), Adam Householder, Orange, Calif. (No. 24, Chevy Silverado), Jesse Ashcraft, San Marcos, Calif. (No. 78, Ford F-150) and Ken Losch, Tempe Ariz. (No. 10, Chevy Silverado).
Nearly entries are expected to compete in 35 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks in the upcoming 44th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, the granddaddy of all desert races. The season finale of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series will be held Nov. 17-20 in Ensenada, Mexico. With late entries accepted up until race morning, entries from nearly 35 US States and 15 countries are expected to take the green flag in the 692.82-mile course.
Pre-race festivities will be held in Ensenada on Thursday, Nov. 17, and the elapsed-time race will start at 6:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 18 with a 32-hour time limit. The awards celebration will be held at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, poolside at the San Nicolas Resort in Ensenada.

Toyota is presenting these prestigious awards to the world’s toughest desert racers for the 26th consecutive year. The Toyota Milestone awards will go to those pro car and truck drivers who finish every required mile in the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series.

“Toyota is proud to honor the world’s best desert racing drivers,” said Les Unger, national motorsports manager at Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. “For over a quarter of a century, Toyota has had the privilege of presenting the SCORE Toyota Milestone Awards to the toughest racers on the planet.”

Baja 1000 the mammoth finale of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series will be a loop race starting and finishing in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, with race week festivities scheduled for Nov. 17.-20. 2011. A solid total of 202 vehicles officially entered in time for last Saturday’s drawing held at SCORE International’s headquarters in Los Angeles. The race itself starts on Friday, Nov. 18 2011. With late entries accepted up until race morning, nearly 300 entries from over 30 US States and 15 countries are expected to take the green flag in the 692.82-mile course, competing in 35 Pro and seven Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs.
The Baja 1000 is one of the oldest and a well known desert race, and it remains as an appealing accomplishment to a racer. Since 1967, the race has been run over the mysterious Baja California peninsula every year except 1974 when the international fuel crisis forced a cancellation. This year’s race will start for the 37th time and finish for the 21st time in Ensenada. Completing its 38th year as the world’s foremost desert racing sanctioning body, the event is the finale of the five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series. The race will start and finish on Boulevard Costero adjacent to the picturesque Bahia de Todos Santos in front of the iconic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center in the heart of Ensenada.
Prerunning on the 692.82-mile loop course will officially begin on Nov 4. 2011.

SCORE Desert Series points standing after round 2 (San Felipe 250) of five races for the 2011 SCORE Desert Series championship is close as veteran SCORE Trophy-Truck driver Jesse Jones and young gun unlimited Class 1 racer Justin Davis lead their respective classes and are tied at the top of SCORE point leader board. Colton Udall is leading the motorcycles points. Other leaders include Luke McMillin, Clyde Stacy, Justin Matney, Heidi Steele, Dan Chamlee, Elias Hanna, Perry McNeil, Jessica McMillin, Brandon Brown, Wes Bevly III & Wes Bevly IV. Desert Series points are based on starting, finishing, placement and number of official starters within each class. Jesse Jones, 45, of Litchfield Park, Ariz., and Justin Davis, 17 of Chino Hills, Calif., not only lead their respective classes following Round 2 of the Desert Series, they are tied for the SCORE Overall point lead with 139 point each. Jones, the reigning Trophy Truck and overall point champion, has finished a very close second in both of the first two races of the season in the No. 1 Jones Motorsports Ford F-250 SCORE Trophy-Truck, while Davis, last year’s SCORE Lite point champion, has won Class 1 in both races in the Green Army Motorsports Chevy-powered ESM unlimited open-wheel desert race buggy.
Off-road racers are now preparing for the season’s next race, the 43rd annual Tecate SCORE Baja 500 to be held 2.-5. June 2011 in Ensenada, Mexico. The event will be the second of three SCORE races held annually on the Baja California peninsula.
In starting defense of his impressive championship from 2010 when he won two races in the Trophy Truck class, Jones started the 2011 season finishing runner-up to Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies by just 59 seconds in Laughlin and then got even closer to the top of the podium in San Felipe, finishing just 44 seconds behind Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren.

“The key is to stay in the hunt early and be in a position to win it all at the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in November and I would say we are on target so far,” said Jones, who also won the 2001 SCORE Class 8 season point title. “We could have won one or both of the first two races, but both Bryce and Rob did a better job and while we want to win races, it is equally gratifying to win the season point championship in SCORE Trophy-Truck—the most competitive class with the world’s best drivers in the entire sport of desert racing.”

Following his first SCORE Trophy-Truck race win in just his second race in this class for high-tech, 850-horsepower, unlimited production trucks, rookie Menzies finished sixth in San Felipe and is currently fourth overall and third in the Trophy Truck division points this year with 135 points in the No. 70 Menzies Motorsports Ford F-150.

Picking up his eighth career SCORE Trophy-Truck race win in San Felipe, MacCachren, an eight-time SCORE season point champion, is third in overall and second in SCORE Trophy-Truck points so far after finishing fourth in Laughlin with 138 points, just one shy of Jones and Davis in the No. 20 MasterCraft Racing Ford F-150. Following consistent seventh and fifth-place finishes in the season’s first two events, Gary Weyhrich, Troutdale, Ore., is fifth in overall points and fourth in SCORE Trophy-Truck with 119 in the No. 98 TSCO Motorsports Ford F-150.

Round 2 of the 2011 SCORE Desert Series will be held 10.-13. March 2011 in Mexico’s picturesque fishing village of San Felipe, located 120 miles south of the U.S. border on the East side of the Baja California peninsula along the azure waters of the tranquil Sea of Cortez. Following January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, this US Desert Racing Series will be visiting Mexico for the first of its three annual SCORE Baja races. Last year’s overall 4-wheel champion was the unlimited Class 1 All German Motorsports team of Armin Schwarz, Germany/Martin Christensen, Escondido, Calif. (Denmark), 2-wheel champion was the JCR Honda team of Colton Udall/Jeff Kargola, San Clemente, Calif. on a Honda CRF450X and the Overall ATV winner was the team of Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif./Josh Caster, El Cajon, Calif./Wes Miller, Los Angeles, on a Honda TRX700X. SCORE International Announces Four of Five Races Scheduled to Comprise 2011 SCORE Desert Series. Preparing to celebrate its 38th year as a North American desert racing sanctioning body, SCORE international officially announced four of its five races scheduled for the 2011 SCORE Desert Series. “Although we aren’t in a position to announce final plans for our August/September race date, SCORE is very pleased to officially announce the other four race dates for our five-race 2011 SCORE Desert Series,” said Sal Fish. “The U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife has determined that because of concerns with the desert tortoise, the Bureau of Land Management cannot permit any desert races during the month of September in the Primm area.” This puts SCORE in a very tough situation regarding a relationship and a race we have enjoyed so much for 15 years in Primm. SCORE is exploring all options regarding this race, including a move to August and possibly moving our September race to another venue, although that is certainly not our first preference. Another very great concern of ours is to attempt as best we can not to schedule our races to conflict with other promoters’ dates.
“Our three SCORE Baja races annually produce over $30 million in overall economic impact for Mexico and we are so well-received down there by the government and the fans it’s a real treat for SCORE and our racers and we looking forward to racing in Baja every year.”

Keeping the same venues and the same race weekends for four of its desert races, the 2011 SCORE Desert Series so far has one race in Southern Nevada and its three SCORE Baja races in Mexico. After being held a week later for several years, the season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge was moved back to its traditional dates on the Martin Luther King holiday weekend in 2010 and will be again in 2011. Las Vegas Events approved the sponsorship of the 2011 event in September.
“We have incredible marketing partners on both sides of the border, the world’s greatest desert racers and the world’s toughest race courses, so we are working diligently to finalize the details for our five race in 2011,” added Fish. “Our race schedule in both the U.S. and Mexico offers tremendous variety for the racers, sponsors, media and fans.”
“With necessary restrictions in place for spectators in the U.S. still our attendance continues to rise, but in Mexico, it’s absolutely unbelievable. Our crowds for the last 12 races in Baja California have averaged over 250,000 (according to Baja California tourism officials), and SCORE racers are as popular in Baja California as any racing figures anywhere in the world.”

Round 2 and 3 of the 2010 SCORE Desert Series will both be held in Mexico.

1061.69 mile for the Trophy Truck showdown between the McMillins and Jesse James for the 2010 desert series trophy Truck crown and championship. The granddaddy of all desert races has 11 of 16 former SCORE Trophy Truck champs entered in the race down Mexico’s Baja California peninsula and without a doubt is a victory at the “mille” a highlight for every desert racers portfolio and top priority on the “to do” list. Yet it’s also the 2010 SCORE Desert Series overall and class championship that will be decided at the brutally-rugged 1061.69-mile Sal Fish signature desert race course. The high-tech, 850 horsepower, unlimited production truck class, star of the sport since SCORE created the class in 1994 will be most observed. Jesse Jones, trophy truck #76 with 315 points after the Primm 300 trailing Andy McMillin by 6 points in the overall standing. Nick Vanderwey the 3rd in points. With just six points separating San Diego’s McMillin, who splits driving with his father Scott McMillin, National City, Calif., in the No. 31 McMillin Realty Ford F-150, and Jones, Litchfield Park, Ariz., who has lured five-time Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 class champion Larry Ragland, Cave Creek, Ariz., this battle promises to be a desert duel for the ages as both battle for the 2010 SCORE Trophy-Truck and 2010 SCORE Overall point championships. Andy McMillin has 321 championship points and Jones has 315. While Andy McMillin has four career SCORE Trophy-Truck race wins, including two with his father, Jones has two and Ragland has an amazing 10, second-most in SCORE Trophy-Truck history.

With just a total of 65 points separating the top 20 overall point leaders in the 2010 SCORE Desert Series, the battles in several individual classes for cars and trucks are even tighter heading into next week’s 15th Annual SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Primm 300 desert race. Round 4 of the five-race 2010 SCORE Desert Series will be held Sept. 10.-12. in Primm, Nev. While November’s season-ending 43rd Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 race in Mexico will finalize the individual class and overall point champions for the 37th year of the world’s foremost desert racing series, the SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Primm 300 will surely determine the contenders for this year’s titles. The SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Primm 300 will feature 21 Pro and 2 Sportsman classes for cars and trucks in Primm, located 45 miles south of Las Vegas at the California border. This year’s starting grid is expected to reach nearly 125 vehicles. Late entries will be accepted up until race morning.

With two wins in three races this year, third generation desert racer Andy McMillin of National City, Calif. leads the SCORE Overall and SCORE Trophy-Truck point standings with 249 championship points so far in the No. 31 McMillin Realty Ford F-150, but with all the points still remaining on the desert floor, his first SCORE championship is anything but secure. A total of 29 SCORE Trophy-Trucks are entered to date for this year, the second-most in the 15-year history of the race.

Especially in the SCORE Trophy-Truck division for high-tech, unlimited production trucks where his 24-point lead over second-place Jesse Jones of Litchfield Park, Ariz., can evaporate quickly in the desert terrain that can be so treacherous to both man and machine. Jones, who won the second round of this year’s series in San Felipe, Mex., in March in his No. 76 Chevy Silverado, has 225 championship points heading into the Southern Nevada desert.

While no class point championships have been decided, the other car and truck classes besides SCORE Trophy-Truck with the tightest and most competitive point battles heading to Primm are the unlimited Class 1, Class 1-2/1600, SCORE Lite, Class 6, Class 10 and Class 5/1600.

“One of the things that makes SCORE desert racing so intriguing is its unpredictability,” commented Sal Fish, SCORE CEO/President since soon after the organization was founded in 1973. “Prep work is paramount in any motorsport, but equally important in our sport is having a patient driver and an intuitive race crew that can not only fix things in a hurry, but anticipate potential issues during the ever-changing conditions on a desert race course.”

“What our racers and their race teams do every race is really amazing and even awe-inspiring. I am sure the ingredients that work so well with our teams in the desert from planning, strategy, logistics, teamwork, creativity, perseverance, ingenuity and endurance all have significant carry-over values for all aspects of life away from the desert. SCORE desert racing has many parallels to daily living which adds even more excitement and enjoyment to the experiences we are able to provide in the desert for our sturdy adventurers.”

For the ninth consecutive year, the race will be split into two groups with the open wheel, slower truck and VW baja bug classes starting at 6 a.m. The featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division along with the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars will start at 1 p.m. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race. The faster classes will be required to cover four laps of the 68.6-mile loop course to become official finishers within the seven-hour time limit.

The main pits and start/finish area for the 68.6-mile loop course will be located behind Buffalo Bills Resort on the North side of the property. The race course, which will run again in a counter-clockwise direction, is virtually the same layout as last year, although weather and use has altered the terrain.

The course will have one designated spectator area, the parking lot behind Buffalo Bill’s Resort adjacent to both the Start/Finish line and the straightaway that parallels the eastside of the parking lot. Admission is free to the designated spectator area.

“Very important at this event is SCORE’s decision to increase safety by mandating a strict 30 miles per hour speed limit in all three of the pit areas, as well as the course loop outbound and inbound sections on NV Energy property,” added Fish. “We are very fortunate that NV Energy continues to support this event by allowing SCORE to use their railroad overpass bridge to transition from the friendly and comfortable atmosphere at the Terrible’s Primm Valley Resorts to the brutal outlying desert course.”

In addition to SCORE Trophy-Truck’s heated point battle, in Class 1, Kory Halopoff/Harley Letner, Orange, Calif., in a Tatum-Chevy has just a two-point lead over Daniel McMillin, El Cajon, Calif., who drives a Jimco-Chevy. In Class 1-2/1600, Daniel McMillin’s brother Luke McMillin in a AlumiCraft-VW has just a one point lead over Hiram Duran and his brothers Eric and Evan of Tecate, Calif., who race in a Neth-VW.

In SCORE Lite, Justin Davis, Chino Hills, Calif., has a four-point lead in a Seagrove-VW over defending class point championship team of Brent Parkhouse, Long Beach, Calif./Brian Burgess in a Moulton-VW and Lee Banning Sr. and Junior are just two points behind Parkhouse and six behind Davis. In Class 10, San Diego’s Alex Crosthwaite in a Jimco-Honda has just a one-point lead over Sergio Salgado, Mexicali, Mexico, who races in another Jimco-Honda.

In another competitive group, Class 6 for unlimited, production mini trucks, Dave Caspino, Woodland Hills, Calif., in a Ford Ranger has won his class in all three races this year in his first season in the class and leads the defending Class 6 season point champion Heidi Steele, San Clemente, Calif., who also drives a Ford Ranger, by 29 points.

Another close class point race is in Class 5/1600 for 1600cc VW Baja Bugs where there is a pair of Mexican nationals from Ensenada who are leading with Gustavo Avina having a four point advantage after three races over Alonso Angulo, the defending season point champion in the historic class.

Ten of last year’s class winners in the SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Primm 300 have also entered so far, including seven of last year’s top 10, and 11 of the top 15 overall finishers.

NASCAR Cup team owner/driver and defending overall race and SCORE Trophy-Truck winner Robby Gordon is entered again this year. Gordon, of Charlotte, N.C., who drives the No. 1 Team Gordon Chevy CK1500 SCORE Trophy-Truck as the reigning SCORE Overall point champion, is a two-time overall winner in this race, having won both the inaugural race in 1996 as well as last year’s event. Like he did last year, Gordon is scheduled to have a replacement driver behind the wheel of his NASCAR Toyota Camry in Richmond, Va., while he competes in his SCORE Trophy-Truck in the Southern Nevada desert. He will be starting 14th in the SCORE Trophy-Truck class this year.

Starting behind the 29 SCORE Trophy-Trucks will be the unlimited Class 1 for open-wheel desert race cars, which has 18 official entries so far. In the first 14 years of the SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Primm 300, SCORE Trophy-Trucks have 10 Overall race wins while Class 1 has four. SCORE Trophy-Trucks have won seven straight overall titles.

Among the entries in Class 1 is the international team of Germany’s World Rally Championship veteran Armin Schwarz and Denmark’s Martin Christensen, who lives in Escondido, Calif. Schwarz/Christensen have teamed up to win Class 1 in this race the last two consecutive years. They drew the seventh starting slot in Class 1, giving their BMW-powered Jimco No. 107 for this race. Driving the second All German Motorsports entry in Class 1, the No. 111 Jimco-Chevy, will be the veteran WRC team of Germany’s Armin Kremer and Austria’s Andrea Aigner.

Behind SCORE Trophy-Truck and Class 1, the class with the most entries is SCORE Lite with 13 entries to date.

Besides Gordon and Schwarz/Christensen, the other defending class winners entered as of today are Justin Smith, Capistrano Beach, Calif. (Class 1-2/1600, Fraley-VW), Dan Chamlee, Carpenteria, Calif. (Class 7, Ford Ranger), Norm Turley, Long Beach, Calif. (Class 7SX, Ford Ranger), Clyde Stacy, Bristol, Va./Justin Matney, Bristol, Tenn. (Class 8, Chevy Silverado), Ronny Wilson, Long Beach, Calif. (SCORE Lite, Jimco-VW), Mike Lawrence, Sunset Beach, Calif., (Class 10, Lothringer-VW), Peter Lang, Santa Rosa, Calif. (Sportsman Car, Homebuilt-Chevy) and Joe Aguayo, San Jacinto, Calif., (Sportsman Truck, Ford F-150).

Pre-race festivities on Friday, Sept. 10, for the SCORE Las Vegas Terrible’s Primm 300, including tech and contingency and the SCORE Manufacturer’s Midway, will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. behind Buffalo Bill’s Resort. The post-race awards celebration will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday (Sept. 12) in the conference center at Terrible’s Primm Valley Resort.

The highly-competitive 2010 SCORE Desert Series has 20 racers separated by just 65 points in the Overall standings after January’s 16th SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, March’s 24th Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 and June’s 42nd Tecate SCORE Baja 500 desert races.

There is never real been a Baja 250, it’s been always the Baja 250 I recall. The name changed for this year a little since MasterCraft Safety became a co-sponsor and it is now official the 24th Annual MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250 in 2010. It’s a little long, that name, San Felipe 250 sure “flows” quicker in a conversation but ones got to respect the supporter of the sport. And for Robbie Pierce and MasterCraft to commit and sponsor the event deserves also the recognition within the baja races name. As pre-running over the rugged race course starts tomorrow, Saturday for next month’s 24th Annual MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, a growing field, that includes many of North Americas best desert racers and a few internationals, have entered this popular spring race. Attracting entries from 22 states and eight countries, the lineup includes a race-record 34 entries in the Trophy-Truck class, the top league in SCORE desert off-road racing.

With nearly 275 entries expected, which would be in the top five in race history, competition will be held in 28 Pro and 6 Sportsman classes in the 232-mile race. The green flag will drop at 6 a.m. Pacific time on Saturday, March 13, for the motorcycle and ATV classes, followed three hours later by the car and truck classes at approximately 10 a.m. local time. The start and finish line for the race will once again be the landmark San Felipe Arches on Highway 5 on the outskirts of San Felipe. One vehicle will start every 30 seconds in the elapsed-time race, with a 10-hour time limit to become an official finisher.
Following January’s season-opening SCORE Laughlin Desert Challenge, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series will visit Mexico for the first of three races in 2010.

Desert racers Ron Whitton of Arizona and Southern California’s Robby Bell received the first starts for four-wheel and two-wheel vehicles in the computerized drawing for starting positions held Feb. 13. Whitton races in the featured SCORE Trophy-Truck division while Bell competes in Class 22 for open motorcycles.
Drawing the first starting slot for the unlimited Class 1 open-wheel desert race cars was Germany’s Armin Schwarz and teammate Martin Christensen, Escondido, Calif.
Riding the first ATV off the line will be Class 25 team led by Wayne Matlock, El Cajon, Calif.

Bell, 24, of Sun City, Calif., who left the factory Honda team at the end of 2008 after winning the two-wheel overall title in San Felipe three straight years (2006, 2007, 2008), returns to San Felipe for the first time since on a Kawasaki, leading a two-motorcycle Bruce Penhall Motorsports charge to Baja on the No. 2x Kawasaki KX450F. His co-rider, also a former Honda champion, is legendary SCORE Baja racer Steve Hengeveld, 34, Oak Hills, Calif., who was the overall San Felipe motorcycle winner for four straight year’s with Honda icon Johnny Campbell (2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004). Kawasaki will have factory-supported entries in San Felipe for this first time since 1996 and will attempt to break the JCR Honda dynasty which has won 12 of the last 13 SCORE San Felipe 250 races.
In the first 23 years of this race, Honda has earned 14 overall motorcycle victories (including the last four years), Kawasaki has six, KTM has two and Husqvarna has one.

At the 24th MasterCraft Safety Tecate SCORE San Felipe 250, MasterCraft Racing has entered not only company owner Robbie Pierce’s No. 30 Chevy Silverado SCORE Trophy-Truck, but also the No. 20 Chevy Silverado SCORE Trophy-Truck to be driven by eight-time SCORE season class point champion Rob MacCachren of Las Vegas and the No. 42 Chevy Silverado driven by Will Staats, Valencia, Calif. All three trucks were built by prominent chassis builder Mike Julson’s Jimco Racing Products of Santee, Calif. Julson is listed as a co-driver for both Pierce and MacCachren for this race, if needed.
The MasterCraft racers will not be eligible to win any part of the special $10,000 MasterCraft Safety cash contingency bonus purse MasterCraft Safety has offered for this year’s San Felipe race.
In San Felipe, Pierce will start fourth, MacCachren 21st and Staats 25th in the massive SCORE Trophy-Truck field.
